November is National Radon Awareness Month in Canada

Radon Periodic Table

Radon poses a great danger to many Canadians, even if they don’t know it yet. Of the tens of thousands of Canadians who die of lung cancer every year, around 3,000 of those deaths are due to radon exposure, making it the second most common cause of lung cancer just behind smoking.

Since this November is both Lung Cancer Awareness Month and National Radon Awareness Month in Canada, we wanted to take this opportunity to tell you about radon so you can know how to keep your family safe.

What is radon?

Radon is a radioactive gas created by the decay of trace amounts of uranium in the earth’s crust. This odorless, tasteless, and invisible gas can then infiltrate your home through the soil and remain there completely hidden until it’s too late. Radon can enter your home through well water or public water supplies, but this is less common.

Radon often enters through the foundation, but it can be found anywhere in your home. Even a second floor bedroom could have elevated radon levels. Health Canada recommends you take immediate action if you have radon levels above 200 becquerels per cubic meter, but any level of radon can be dangerous.

So what can I do?

At Doug Lacey’s Basement Systems we believe that the worst thing you can do is take risks with the health and safety of your family. So our advice: “Don’t wait, Mitigate.” Any level of radon can be dangerous even if your home tests below 200 becquerels per cubic meter.

The good news though is that a radon mitigation system is not only effective but also affordable. Qualified radon professionals, like our team, can quickly and easily install a radon mitigation system that can provide you peace of mind. Even should the level of radon in your home fluctuate, your radon mitigation system will still continue to keep you and your family safe. It can also provide peace of mind to prospective home buyers who will likely be relieved to learn that your home is already protected.
