Radon levels all over Calgary differ greatly, even with 2 neighbors side by side. We went into a home in the NW community of Evanston, and tested their radon levels. We were very surprised to see the number of 700 Bq/m3. This number is over 3 times the levels that health Canada states you should mitigate it. This family had moved into their house a few years ago and had no idea they were living with radon the whole time. They have since installed a radon mitigation system and their number have decreased to a safe amount.
A few weeks later we went to test the radon levels at a house on the same street. We were shocked when we say that this home, just a few houses down the street, had a radon reading that was under 200 Bq/m3.
We hope that this story can prove to all the homeowners in Calgary that:
1) if you haven't tested your radon levels yet, you should do it asap! You never know how much radon you are living with and,
2) Just because your neighbor, or someone that lives near you got a low radon reading, it does not mean that your radon reading will be low as well.
Radon levels around Calgary are as unpredictable as the weather, so make sure to keep you and your family safe!

This homeowner in SE Calgary, Alberta had encountered issues with water entering the basement of their home. Looking for a permanent and reliable solution they contacted the experts at Doug Lacey's Basement Systems.
A System Design Specialist was able to assess the situation and provide the homeowners with a FREE, no obligation quote to address all of their concerns. Our Production Team went to the home to install our SuperSump® sump pump system. A full-featured system, SuperSump® includes the best components available including a top-rated 1/3HP Zoeller® pump is designed for reliability & high-volume pumping. What you will notice is there is no discharge line coming out of the top of the sump pump lid, a side discharge was installed instead. Similar to a top discharge the hole for sump is jackhammered and the basin is installed flush with the floor. The difference with a side discharge is the plumbing off the pump is directed out the side of the basin below the lid. We then install a solid lid that sits flush with the concrete floor. The discharge line can then be run to the exterior wall and up the wall before being cored through to the exterior of the home. The home owner can then finish with stud framing and drywall and conceal the discharge line. Carpet or other flooring material can be laid over top of the solid sump lid so long as access remains for future maintenance on the sump system. Basement Systems also installs a WaterWatch alarm system on side discharge sumps with a probe and wire to a small box. If the water levels were to reach the probe an alarm would warn the owner that there is an issue with the system.

A homeowner in NW Calgary, Alberta noticed heaving and water saturation beside the walkout basement of her home. Wanting to know her options on how to permanently fix this issue, she called Doug Lacey's Basement Systems to see what her options were!
A System Design Specialist was able to visit the home to assess the situation and provide her with a FREE, no obligation quote. One of our Production Foreman and his crew then went to the home to get the job done. A 7 ft sump pump was installed which is primarily used for either a walk out or an area where the furnace vents go through the floor. What caused the water saturation was the plenum goes through the basement floor and then redistributes the heat underneath the concrete slab, in this case what typically happens the tin starts to rust and water breaches into the plenum so our solution is to provide a 7’ sump to get underneath the plenum to redirect the water to the sump pump. Attached to the to the home and then to the exterior piping an IceGuard® system was installed, which is an anti-freeze fitting that ejects water away from the foundation in the event that the sump pump discharge lines freeze or become clogged.

Also installed with the sump pumps is our patented IceGuard® system, an anti-freeze fitting that is installed outside of your home and ejects water away from the foundation in the event that the sump pump discharge lines freeze or become clogged.
By having them installed during the building of the new addition it also saves the homeowners time, money, not to mention the floor slab can now be poured perfectly level to the top of the sump basin.
